Gas vs. Electric Dryers: What's Different About the Vent?
From the outside, gas and electric dryers look almost identical, and the vent line is physically the same. But what travels through that vent is different — and that changes both the safety risk and how we service the appliance.
Electric dryers
An electric dryer moves hot air, lint, and moisture. A clogged vent traps all three, which drives up dry times, stresses the heating element, and can eventually start a lint fire.
The main risks are fire and appliance damage. There's no combustion byproduct — no carbon monoxide.
Gas dryers
A gas dryer moves everything above plus the exhaust from a small natural gas or propane burner. That exhaust contains carbon monoxide.
A clogged vent on a gas dryer can back CO into the laundry room. That makes maintenance a health issue, not just a fire issue.
Gas dryers also need clear combustion air around the appliance — never store cleaning products or boxes tight against a gas dryer.
What service looks like for each
The cleaning process is the same: brush the vent line from both ends, vacuum with HEPA filtration, and airflow-test the run.
On gas units we also inspect the appliance connector, confirm proper clearances, and verify the exterior flap is functioning so CO can escape.
Every home with a gas dryer should have a working CO detector on that level of the house.
